If there is a demand for instant, usable and functional living space, a loft conversion will help to achieve this.  A building contractor will assess the available space and determine if a loft conversion is possible.  Homeowners, who are considering converting their lofts or attics into functional storage or living space, will need to bear in mind that such a conversion is relatively complex and that carrying out a loft conversion is best handled by expert professionals.

Although such a conversion is doable for a keen DIYer – an attic or a loft conversion requires a substantial amount of work and planning and if the renovation is not done correctly, instead of increasing the value of the home and allowing for extra space to be created, it can devalue the home and become unusable or wasted space.

In addition to carrying out conversions of home attics, such renovations are often carried out on former industrial building, such as warehouses, docks or factories. These improvements are done when these non-residential buildings are being converted into residential homes. This is a widespread practice in a number of older previously business–zoned areas, such as SoHo in the United Kingdom and in a number of American neighbourhoods, like the famed Greenwich Village in Manhattan.

Prior to an attic or loft alteration taking place, the building owner will need to apply to their local building authority and submit plans to the authorities, detailing how the conversion will take place. The proposed renovations will need to satisfy various building control regulations and meet all the set out health and safety laws. When a building owner or homeowner takes the decision to enlist the services of an experienced building contractor, such matters will be taken care of by the appointed service provider.

Once the roof space conversion has been completed and the alterations meet all the required building control regulations, the newly created space can be utilised for any number of purposes, including a bedroom, office or a relaxation space.
