Maintaining your car

A motor car is not just a mode of transport to get from A to B, it is an investment and it needs to be cared for by carrying out regular services and maintenance. When maintaining your car, not only are you ensuring that all components are in good working order and the vehicle will continue to get you from A – B, you are taking care of a movable asset and a car with a full service history will receive top dollar from a prospective buyer.
The purpose of frequently checking and inspecting vehicle components is to find possible problems and resolve them before they end up costing a fortune to repair. All types of vehicles (be they cars, vans, 4x4s or commercial vehicles) must be serviced at regular intervals and the type of servicing that is required is dictated by the car’s mileage. The maintenance of a relatively new motor car will not necessarily cost a fortune and will involve simple servicing, like the changing of spark plugs, oil and filters. A slightly older motor vehicle with higher mileage will probably require additional maintenance, which may include the replacing of filters, belts, brake pads, etc.
Car owners who have a basic knowledge of the workings of a motor vehicle should still vist a specialist garage to have the vehicle serviced – although if you’re a proficient DIY motor-mechanic, you could have a go yourself. However when it comes to more complicated jobs, such as the changing of the cam belt, this is best left to professional motor mechanics who have been trained in this regard. Most new cars are sold with servicing or maintenance plans and these cover various repairs when needed. Only vehicles which are well maintained and which have been serviced as required, will receive the necessary funding to carry out such repairs.
When a vehicle is not well looked after and is not serviced regularly, its performance will be severely hampered as the oil becomes thick and this causes sluggish performance. A car which is sluggish will cost more to run, in terms of petrol costs, etc. Maintaining your car and regular servicing is a must for all motorcar owners.
