Fascias & Soffits

The ‘roofline’ refers to those elements which make up part of your roof which are not part of the roof itself. Words like ‘soffit’, ‘fascia’, ‘barge boards’, ‘gutters’, ’guttering’ and ‘dry verges’ may just be double dutch to some readers, but they are all vital elements of your roof which ensure that it stays leak free as well as protected by the elements.
Made mainly out of plastics (probably uPVC – or unplasticized poly-vinyl chloride, to give it its full name), your roofline is the part of your roof which often goes unnoticed – or at the very least, unappreciated. The roofline itself is made up of 5 different parts:
Fascia
Gutters (guttering)
Soffit
Down pipe
Dry verge
The fascia is the part which runs up the side of the gable end (the ‘A’ of the roof), the soffit is the part which protects the underside of the roof, whilst the dry verges are the bits which cap off the slates or tiles.
To remove surface or rain water from your roof - of course, being aided by the natural pitch, you will need to have good quality, lightweight and leaf-free guttering. This guttering, if fitted correctly, will be fitted to have a steady slope leading to a down-pipe (or drain pipe). It is these two elements which keep your roof from flooding your house.
You will be able to find a specialist fitter of soffits, fascias, gutters and other roofline products. Very often, because they are elements of your roof, it will be a regular roofing company who your call will be answered by. However, such is the popularity of roofline uPVC, there are one or two dedicated companies in each town or city. Who ever you choose, you will probably pay around the same price and get the same excellent level of fit and finish.
Because they are made largely of plastics, your guttering, fascias and other parts of your roofline will require very little, if any, maintenance. No priming, no rubbing down and no painting. This means that they are very much a ‘set and forget’ item. In reality, just a quick wipe down will be sufficient to keep your soffits, and fascias looking like new. Every year, we recommend that you remove any leaves or debris from the gutters to ensure that rainwater can flow from the roof and into the fall pipes successfully.
