You may find, with a standard pitched roof, that one of your roof tiles has been dislodged by the wind, or perhaps one of the ridge tiles on your roof has broken away and is in need of re-fixing. Age (which, along with wet weather) may have caused deterioration on one or two of the nails which hold your slate tiles in place and this may have caused them to slip, or the timbers of your roof may have, over time, just perished or are beginning to weaken.
Flat roofs also require repairs; certainly the older, more traditional built up felt kind of flat roof because these simply deteriorate with age. Newer kinds of flat roof materials, such as GRP fibreglass or rubber (EPDM) do have a significantly longer life span – and come with a far longer guarantee – but everything deteriorates with time and so everything, at some point, is likely to require repairing or replacing.
Who will be able to repair my roof?
Whatever the cause and the problem with your roof, there will always be a number of professional local roofers on hand who will be able to perform a simple, or quite significant roof repair. Avoid those who knock on your door, telling you your roof needs repairing, instead look out for a good strong trading history, a sign written vehicle and membership to some kind of recognised or approved roofing professional body, such as the NFRC or CORC, Fair Trades or FSB. They should come and inspect your roof (it may not always be necessary to climb ladders to see the problem, although most roofers will want to do this, certainly if the repair is significant.
How much will a roof repair cost?
Roof repairs vary a lot in price, normally due to the size of the repair required. If it is a simple replacement of a roof tile or roof slate, you may be looking at investing no more than £70 – £100 to have it put right. On the other hand, your roof may require a complete rebuild. something which is likely to cost a few thousand pounds to have it fixed, depending on the size of the roof in question.
